Highclere Castle – a day trip to the famous home of Downton Abbey Tour!

Londontaxinow are proud to provide services to Highclere Castle, home of Downton Abbey Tours. Approximately 1.5 hours from central London, Highclere Castle is a perfect venue for the day for any Downton Abbey fans, or anyone looking for a relaxing day away from the City.

After being transported in our state-of-the-art Mercedes Vito London taxis (fully air-conditioned, able to accommodate 6 passengers, as well as wheelchair access) you will be ready to explore the incredible 5,000-acre estate.

Originally Jacobean, Highclere Castle was designed by Capability Brown on the foundations of an old medieval palace; the Palace of the Bishops of Winchester, owners of the estate since the 8th century. However, since 1679, Highclere has been home to the Earls of Carnarvon. The castle continued to inspire, including the movement of
Sir Charles Barry and his renaissance architecture.
Into the 20th century, the castle became home to some of the worlds most famous Egyptian artefacts as a result of the 5th Earl of the land being an enthusiastic Egyptologist. He later accompanied Howard Carter in their discovery of the famed tomb of Tutankhamun in 1992. A little further down the line reaches the 7th Earl – Henry Herbert. After becoming great friends with Queen Elizabeth II, he became her racing manager, with the Queen making frequent visits to Highclere Castle in her free time.
Finally, a 21st century restoration amounting to £12million resulted in the castle becoming home to the renowned drama Downton Abbey. With tearooms, exhibitions, tours, and gardens (including the famous summer Flower Meadow and Egyptian artefact tours), there is a host of things to do at this historic location. Highclere remains an ‘English Arcadia’ with grand perspectives across the estate. At the end of your fantastic day out, your driver will transport you back to your hotel in style and comfort.
