The RHS Chelsea Flower Show has been held in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, London every year since 1913, apart from gaps during the two World Wars. Once Britain’s largest flower show (it has now been overtaken by RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show), it is still the most prestigious.

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society which was founded in 1804. In 1927 there was a campaign to get the RHS to ban foreign exhibits from RHS Chelsea to reduce competition with British firms. The RHS refused saying, ‘horticulture knows nothing of nationality.’
In 1932 the rain at the Show was so severe that a summer house display fell to pieces. One very wet year an exhibitor named it ‘The Chelsea Shower Flow’.
The Great Pavilion is roughly 11,775 square metres or 2.90 acres, enough room to park 500 London buses.
Of the firms that exhibited at the first Show in 1913, three can still be seen at the Show today: McBean’s Orchids, Blackmore & Langdon and Kelways Plants.
A cap of 157,000 was placed on the number of visitors to the showground in 1988.

Accessibility information for disabled visitors to the show

For all queries and bookings, please call 0844 581 0787.

All catering facilities are fully accessible, with the exception of Rock Bank Restaurant, Seafood & Champagne Restaurant and Thames View Food Court.
Visitors unable to access Rock Bank Restaurant can phone to pre-book a table at the Laurent-Perrier Champagne Lounge, where they will be offered the Champagne Lounge or Seafood Restaurant menus. Bookings close on 13 May.
Visitors unable to access the Seafood & Champagne Restaurant can be accommodated in the Laurent-Perrier Champagne Lounge where, on request, they will be offered the Seafood menu.
Visitors who cannot access Thames View Food Court can find similar menus at Rock Bank and Ranelagh Food Courts. The nearby Chelsea Graze and Creek Gate Food Court are accessible and offer a wide range of food and drink.

Exhibits and gardens

All marquees, gardens and floral exhibits are accessible and can be viewed from ground level. None of the gardens are designed for public access. All marquees and some floral exhibits can be walked through. Where possible, gardens are fronted by hard-surface pavement, road or trackway. The areas around the gardens are often busy, so disabled visitors may wish to consider arriving early or late in the day to avoid peak times.

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs are welcomed in all areas.

Disabled assistance

Attendants cannot be provided but one companion is admitted free of charge per visitor whose disability necessitates assistance. Please mention this at the time of booking as discounts cannot be applied retrospectively. Proof of eligibility is required and all tickets are subject to availability. Disabled tickets can be booked by calling 0844 581 0787* (unfortunately online booking is not available); or you can if you are not able to book by phone.

Parking is available in Burton’s Court, which can be reserved when booking a wheelchair or disabled ticket. The cost of parking is £19.50 for the day.
Parking is also available in Battersea Park. Buses with wheelchair access run regularly to and from the show. Visitors requiring the mobility bus should advise the parking stewards on arrival at Battersea Park.

A limited number of manual wheelchairs are available for use at the show and must be reserved in advance*. A charge of £10 will be made for wheelchair hire.
Please note that the wheelchair collection point is located outside the showground adjacent to the parking at Burton’s Court, and that we are only able to provide manual wheelchairs at Chelsea. Please let us know at the time of booking if you wish to collect your wheelchair from the Bull Ring Gate entrance. Collection points are located outside the showground.
